What an interesting story. For me ,the focus on the youth can be the best for the fashion industry. The youth constitute the greatest percentage of the population. They have a great influence on their parents and can easily collect money to spend on fashions..I strongly believe they should be included.

If we could capture the enthusiasm Mike has for using trained member in our Marketing classrooms stores would never need help finding employees for stores. It takes someone who's drive and determination matches Mike's. When Finish Line committment to DECA, they committed in a big way, and now have a strong partnership that is a feeder system for employees for many years to come. I congratulate Finish Line and Mike for making this work

I like the positive reflection from retailers but I also know that it can be very frustrating in retail in these tight economic times. After all, being rewarded with helping customers is one thing, earning sales commission is the necessity flip-side.

I've never heard branding approached in quite this manner - consider me enlightened! And I particularly loved your mentioning of pursuing a retail job that matches your own buying preferences; some of the best places to work undoubtedly utilize such techniques as these (that is, hiring only those who perceptibly maintain a passion for the product being sold). After all, in order to sell anything, you need to sell the customer on that product, right? And the average consumer is getting more and more adept at discerning whether their salesperson actually cares about the product.

But how can we - that is, the lower-level masses, those of us not quite fortunate enough to make it to a CEO position - utilize those techniques you're describing? I feel as though they're best suited for the upper levels...

It is very easy to forget as we interact with our customers, that they aren't just a number-a headcount-a pocketbook. They are people. This was inspirational, because it didn't focus on what we could gain by doing "xyz", but on what value Johnny, and all of us can do to bring a smile to someone else. When we give with no thought of gain, the richest opportunities present themselves. We always tell our vendors at Vendors' Flea Market, to focus on the people who come to their booth as a person, and to share their knowledge and enthusiasm with them.:)

Great insights. I especially like your point about staying focused on the customer. I've found that staying focused on the customer, and using that focus to drive merchandising strategy, is one of the only ways to stay ahead of ever changing consumer behavior.

Great interview, looking forward to more.

I have been a loyal customer of LL Bean for over 20 years. I have not complaints about LL Bean and their customer service. The complaint that I have is that the LL Bean Card (Barclays) has provided horrible service. Subsequently, I had to close my LL Bean account because of the astronomical fees they are charging. I believe that this company should change their business with another more reputable credit card company.

Great article. As a past supplier to Lands' End now in education I would be interested in knowing Mr. Coe's view on education. Does the advantage go to a student prepared at a fashion school or a traditional busisiness school and secondly what of a student who receives an MBA in Fashion.
